Walailak University Welcomes the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia

Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand, His Excellency Rachmat Budiman, paid a visit to Walailak University. He was welcomed by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice President for Global Engagement at Chopradu Chamber, 4th floor, Administration Building, Walailak University Hospital.

     On 2 December 2022, His Excellency Rachmat Budiman, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand, and delegations paid a courtesy call to the President of Walailak University.

     The purpose of the visit is to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between Walailak University and Indonesia, particularly in the areas of education and cultural development.

     Thailand and Indonesia have established diplomatic relations for over 72 years, since 7 March 1950. And the two countries have a very close relationship in politics, economy, and society.

     Currently, there are seven Indonesian lecturers and three students at Walailak University.

     “It is indeed a great honor for me to be here at Walaialak University, one of the best universities in Thailand. We are interested to have cooperation between Walailak University and many universities in Indonesia,” said His Excellency Rachmat. 

     With 9 Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) that Walailak University has with Indonesian universities, Ambassador Rachmat believes that both organizations can help make the current MOUs more active and yield more tangible results.

     At the present, around 3,000 Indonesians are residing in Thailand and most of them are students. The number is quite similar to Thai students attending Indonesian schools and universities. The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Kingdom of Thailand recognizes the importance of this matter and would like to assist in promoting mobility and enhancing collaboration between the two countries.

     On this occasion, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, briefed the ambassador on the progress of Walailak University. Professor Sombat said: “We spend so many years improving ourself. And this year, we received a lot of rewards.”

     Earlier in October 2022, Walailak University was ranked by Times Higher Education World University 2023 at 1501+ among 1,800 universities assessed worldwide. The university was also placed at 801st – 1000th globally in Life sciences subject by THE World University Rankings 2023. And over 90 percent of the university’s lecturers are certified by Advance HE based on the UK Professional Standard Framework (UKPSF).

     Ambassador Ratmach and delegations were also given a tour of Walailak University Hospital and attended a group photo session with Walailak University executives at Honor Hall, 4th floor, Administration Building, Walailak University Hospital, before returning to Bangkok.
